About Me Me Me!

scottI'm from a small town, 139 people if that. I had to look within to entertain, because there was nothing much to do without driving a few miles. So I started a collection of VHS movies that would get me through the 3 channel era of my small town. This is what gave me my love for movies no doubt. I did my Martial Arts thing, it was my sport. I was (and still am when meeting someone the first time) the quiet guy, never saying much. Mostly cause my words got all tangled coming out and ended making me sound pretty stupid. I usually won't shut up when I get to know you. I'll go on and on with strange philosophical thoughts and talk of the meaning of life, not to mention the strange voices I make when I'm in creation mode. I'm all heart, would do anything for anyone. I try to make smart decisions, and it makes me come off as slow minded at times. It works for humor though cause I'm always unexpected when I have something to add. Guess that comes from being ignored in a conversation and waiting for that crucial timing to speak. ;)

The Doodle Bug
I've been interested in the arts for a long while. It started at an early age. When I was growing up, I would visit my Grandparents every Sunday. I kept myself busy by sketching from the funnies or anything else I found interesting and at my disposal. Drawing from classics like Garfield, Hagar, and Peanuts, I started mixing the things I learned from each to make my own style.

I always seemed to be drawing things for my classmates all through school and I was always doodling in the margins of my notes in class. In college I did personalized buttons to raise money for my M.E.N.C. chapter. I started a college paper comic strip with two good friends of mine. The comic strip went on to win the Nebraska Golden Leaf award for 3 years in a row. I got hooked on comic books as well, and drawing my own hero adventures. Artists like Jim Lee, Todd MacFarlane, and Sam Keith really caught my eye and made me realize just how much fun drawing a story can be.

I've widened my range of mediums since by doing some wood burning on quivers and arm guards for archery equipment, engraving on my Sister's flute, painting lettering on the side of a van, and now exploring the age of technology with computer graphics and animations.

The Music
The interest in music came around my high school years. I took a few solo pieces on Alto saxophone to contest and had lots of fun working up the music and performing it. I was in band for all my high school years, and attended band camp for a couple summers. It was at band camp that I truly got the music bug. I was in the Jazz band I had my first experience with improvising. The rush of making up my own solo during a jazz piece made me want to continue my education in music. I went to college for music after high school and graduated with a Music Marketing degree. Among my favorite classes were my music theory classes and my independent study in music composition.

I picked up the guitar in my last years of high school as well. Being inspired by a couple seniors that would play in the band room after school, I started trying to learn. I found that my Grandfather and my Uncles played guitar, so I soaked up as much knowledge of the instrument as I could from them. I played in my first Rock band as a senior in high school. I have a page with mp3s and more info on that band HERE. It was pretty raw sounding but I wouldn't trade it, cause it helped me learn about the rock group experience. During college I played the guitar in a jazz combo that we had for a few semesters. It really helped me learn more about chords since I didn't really have a 'play by note' background. Then after college, I started what would be the band 3 Ton Jack with James Johnston, a fellow worker at Certified Transmission. This lasted several years, and kept me real busy. We had songs on the radio and seemed to be doing real well, but as with most things the fire seems to die down. I hope to return to it someday possibly, and rekindle the fire that I know is still there. Check out an mp3 clip of a 3TJ song HERE. Now, I just try and jam with anyone who'll indulge me, and I still write songs and work on my solo effort. I still take time to explore all my artistic expressions.

The Written Word
I really enjoy writing words for my songs also, and since back in the high school years I've always written down my thoughts, even if they don't make sense to me when reading them back sometimes. I'm really into philosophy and just plain documenting events in my life. I have started several fictional stories as well, but I haven't stuck with them as much as many of my other creations unfortunately. That connects into some of my film stuff also, I think it would be cool to write a screenplay for movie sometime. To check out some of my poetic ramblings go -->HERE<--

I guess you could say that I've always had a thing for creation, whether it be music, written word, or art. I suppose it helps me feel closer to God in a way. Like being in the outdoors, a splendid creation that is unsurpassed. Such grand scope, the complexity and simplicity of it.

I've been told by many friends and family over the years that I should do something with my talents, and I agree. It's taken a while to get where I can start getting my creations out there, and this site is just the start.

I truly hope that you enjoy my creations and continue to push me to better myself in the arts I do so cherish. - Later, Scottman
